What is BOROUX?

BOROUX makes gravity filters from food-safe stainless steel (AISI 304): two chambers stacked on top of each other, the water sinks through the filter elements in the upper chamber and is ready, filtered, behind the tap. No power, no connection to the water mains, no installer.

The brand was set up by the team behind the largest American Berkey dealer, together with the factory that made the original Black Berkey formula. You can read the whole story in BOROUX: the successor to Berkey. Alternatievemiddelen.nl in Hegelsom is the only official BOROUX dealer in Europe.

Two sizes, four colours

The Legacy Compact (6.8 litres) fits in most kitchens and, according to the shop, is suitable for 1 to 3 people. The Legacy (11.4 litres) is made for 2 to 6 people and can be expanded from two to four elements. Both come as standard with two BOROUX Foundation Black elements, and both are available in stainless steel, white, black and sage green, with matching taps and sight glass taps. A water filter you do not have to hide away.

The Foundation Black elements

The BOROUX Foundation Black elements use the same basic formula of, among other things, compressed activated carbon as the original Black Berkey elements, made in the same place in America, with new patented improvements. They have been tested by the independent IAPMO laboratory and certified by WQA to NSF/ANSI 42 (taste, odour, particulates), NSF/ANSI 372 (lead-free material) and NSF/ANSI 401 (microplastics). They also fit in any Berkey system.

Guideline for Dutch tap water and average use: replace after a maximum of three years. That is a practical guideline, not a fixed period; more on this in how often do you replace a filter element?

Fluoride: the ProActive add-on filters

The Foundation elements do not filter fluoride, and BOROUX says so plainly. If you want to reduce fluoride, fit the ProActive Fluoride filters underneath: one per Foundation element, with an upflow design that guides the water from the bottom to the top, and without aluminium oxide. They also fit under Black Berkey elements. Guideline: replace after a maximum of one year.

Priming

Foundation elements are primed before first use: you saturate them with water so that the water flows through them properly. With BOROUX's electric priming pump this takes about ninety seconds per element. Would rather not do it yourself? With the Prime Service, the shop primes them for you.

More than a water filter

BOROUX also makes glass drinking bottles, a glass serving jug, stainless steel drinking cups, a wooden stand, a shower filter and a maintenance kit for filter and system. You will find them all on this page.

In short. BOROUX is the continuation of the original Black Berkey formula, by the people who made and sold it. Two stainless steel systems (6.8 and 11.4 litres) in four colours, Foundation Black elements that also fit in a Berkey, fluoride with the ProActive add-on filters, and in Europe only for sale at Alternatievemiddelen.nl.

Frequently asked questions

Which BOROUX suits me?

According to the shop, the Legacy Compact (6.8 litres) is suitable for 1 to 3 people, the Legacy (11.4 litres) for 2 to 6. If you cook a lot with filtered water or prefer not to top up often, choose the larger one. The selection guide works it out with you.

Where do you buy BOROUX in the Netherlands and Europe?

Only at Alternatievemiddelen.nl in Hegelsom: the only official BOROUX dealer in Europe. Tom and Melanie simply answer questions via WhatsApp.

Is BOROUX the same as Berkey?

No. BOROUX is a brand of its own, set up by the team behind the largest American Berkey dealer together with the factory that made the Black Berkey formula. The Foundation Black elements do fit in a Berkey. The difference from the Black Berkey lies in the registration: BOROUX makes no claims about bacteria and viruses. More in Black Berkey alternative.

Do BOROUX Foundation elements fit in my Berkey?

Yes. The Foundation Black elements fit in any Berkey system, and the ProActive fluoride filters also fit under Black Berkey elements.

Does a BOROUX filter fluoride?

The Foundation Black elements do not. For that there are the ProActive Fluoride add-on filters: one under each Foundation element.

How long do the elements last?

As a practical guideline for Dutch tap water and average use: Foundation Black a maximum of three years, ProActive fluoride filters a maximum of one year. If the upper chamber starts to empty noticeably more slowly or the taste changes, it is time sooner.

Do you have to prime BOROUX elements?

Yes, before first use. With the electric priming pump this takes about ninety seconds per element, or you can let the shop do it with the Prime Service.
