Meet the latest innovation in the water filter industry: the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters.

BOROUX is proud of its newest, patented technology for removing fluoride from drinking water. A high-quality, aluminium-free solution that removes up to 99% of the fluoride. By using a hybrid, two-layer granulate and nano carbon material, the filter delivers safe, clean water with long-lasting performance. This new method extends the contact time between the water and the filter materials, which results in improved filtration. These fluoride filters are compatible with the BOROUX Foundation™ Black filters and the Black Berkey filters.

Fluoride filter testing and results

This is perhaps the most important place to start if you want to know more about these filters. The new BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters have been tested up to 3,750 litres (per set of 2). The incoming test water had a fluoride concentration of 0.7 ppm (parts per million).

The performance of the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters in independent laboratory tests is shown in green in the graph below. Three different fluoride filters from competitors are shown in different shades of grey.

The three competitor filters shown below use aluminium oxide in their filters for fluoride reduction.

How do the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters work?

The BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters combine perfectly with the BOROUX Foundation™ Black filters or Black Berkey filters. Together, the filters remove virtually all unwanted contaminants.

The first filtration stage (see image below) takes place when the water flows through the BOROUX Foundation™ Black filter or Black Berkey filter in the upper chamber. Chlorine, sediment and many other contaminants are reduced, taste and odour are improved and the water is prepared for fluoride removal. The BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filter is screwed onto the stem of the filter in the upper chamber and secured.

The second filtration stage (see image below) takes place when the water flows through the double-layer BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filter. The pre-filtered water first flows through the advanced granular carbon for the initial polishing (layer 1). It then passes through a hybrid nano carbon for the final fluoride capture (layer 2).

Thanks to the patented upward-flow design of the stainless steel housing, the water stays in contact with the outer layer of the fluoride filters for a long time, which ensures superior filtration. The filtered water leaves the housing through the outlet holes at the top of the housing (stainless steel holders, not included with this product, see the starter kit for those). This ensures almost even use of the entire surface of the fluoride filters, from bottom to top.

What materials are in the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters?

The BOROUX fluoride filter consists of two separate filtration layers that capture fluoride together. The inner layer consists of granular carbon, a well-known method for keeping out unwanted contaminants. Small, loose grains of a blend of different types of carbon are placed in the centre of the cylindrical filter.

The outer layer of the filter is made of nano carbon. This special carbon mix is moulded into shape and holds the granular carbon inside. The micropores of the nano carbon on the outside prevent contaminant molecules from flowing through. Fluoride molecules are exceptionally small, so a specially formulated nano carbon is needed to form an effective barrier.

The BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filter is enclosed in a surgical-grade stainless steel housing (holder). The housing is made of stainless steel that meets food safety requirements (304). It is therefore approved for contact with food and offers safety and durability. The stainless steel reduces the risk of plastic leaching. The housing is the most important part of the patented upward-flow design, which offers extra protection against toxins in water.

The stainless steel holders are not included with this product, so if you still need the reusable stainless steel holders, please order the starter kit first.

No activated aluminium oxide

Other filters use aluminium oxide as an ingredient to reduce fluoride. BOROUX refuses to use aluminium oxide because of the negative attention it sometimes receives. Activated aluminium oxide filters can sometimes release traces of aluminium into the water. Although aluminium oxide can be effective at reducing fluoride, it works best when a relatively large amount of aluminium oxide is present. Otherwise, performance starts to decline almost immediately. BOROUX decided to avoid this potential exposure by developing a filter with ingredients that contain no aluminium (oxide).

How long do the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters last?

Each set filters up to 3,800 litres of water, with an average lifespan of 6 to 12 months, depending on use and water quality. The test results of the BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter show a reduction of more than 99% up to 1,050 litres of water, an average of almost 80% up to 3,750 litres of water and a minimum reduction of 47.4% up to 3,750 litres of water.

Getting ready for use

The first step is priming the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters. It is important that this is done properly.
