About this product

The BOROUX Foundation Black filter element fits most popular gravity water filter systems, such as Berkey, British Berkefeld, ProOne, Phoenix Gravity, Aqua Logic, Monderma, Pure Filters and Newton. The filter element is designed for long-term use and is fitted with Stem Saver technology for extra durability during use and cleaning.

This BOROUX filter reduces, among other things, more than 99% of chlorine, heavy metals, pharmaceutical contaminants (medication residues), pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, plastic and industrial contaminants (PFAS), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), microplastics and disinfection contaminants. The essential minerals your body needs are retained.

Advanced filtration for a healthier life

The advanced filter technology does not just filter the water, it transforms it. By removing more than 99% of harmful contaminants, the BOROUX Foundation Black filter makes sure your water is as pure and refreshing as nature intended. Every reduction of a contaminant contributes to an improvement in your health and wellbeing!

The filter consists of, among other things, a special mix of activated carbon. The BOROUX Foundation Black filter element contains silver, an antimicrobial agent, to prevent micro-organisms from affecting the product itself. This filter is not intended to filter micro-organisms.

It is also so powerful that it can remove red dyes from water without removing the useful minerals your body needs.

Test reports and certification

The BOROUX Foundation Black filter has been tested by an independent laboratory (IAPMO R&T Lab NJ, ISO/IEC 17025) according to NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53 and 401. See all test reports for more details, with clarity and transparency coming first.

BOROUX water filter systems and filters are Gold Seal certified by the Water Quality Association (WQA), the oldest independent certification body in the water filter industry. Products must meet strict testing requirements to be certified: industry standards (NSF/ANSI/CAN), annual audits of the production facility and compliance with the WQA's certification schemes. Verification and validation through an independent testing process offers the assurance that consumers deserve.

They are certified for:

✔ NSF/ANSI 42: Appearance, taste, odour and nominal particulate class I (view the certification)

✔ NSF/ANSI 372: Lead-free materials (view the certification)

✔ NSF/ANSI/CAN 401: Microplastics ranging in size from ≥ 0.5 µm to < 1 µm (view the certification)

These important achievements underline their commitment to delivering safe, high-quality and effective water filtration solutions. This certification is not just a hallmark: it shows that their products meet the strict standards of NSF International (NSF) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), globally recognised organisations that safeguard public health and the safety of consumer products.

Compatible with other brands

The BOROUX Foundation Black filter is carefully designed to integrate seamlessly with most gravity water filtration systems, including Berkey, British Berkefeld, ProOne, Phoenix Gravity, Aqua Logic, Monderma, Pure Filters, Newton and more. Whether you are renewing the filters in your existing setup or starting a new journey in water wellness, the filters are designed for broad compatibility with gravity water filters.

A BOROUX water filter (BOROUX Legacy or BOROUX Legacy Compact) comes as standard with 2 original BOROUX Foundation Black filter elements. You can optionally expand the BOROUX Legacy water filter to 4 filter elements.

You can order the elements in pairs, but with us you can also order a single filter element. Handy if only one filter element in a water filter needs replacing (for example due to damage or loss) or if you want to replace the element in, for example, the Go Berkey (which only has 1 in it).

The box of the BOROUX Foundation Black filter element contains the following parts:

● 1x BOROUX Foundation Black filter element

● 1x Black rubber ring: to fit between the filter element and the stainless steel container

● 1x Wing nut: for tightening the filter element

● 1x Priming Button: brown rubber ring for priming the filter element with the tap

● 1x PrimeRite Universal Primer: blue rubber attachment for the tap, for priming the filter element

● 1x English-language manual (a Dutch manual can be downloaded in our library and is also sent by email after your order)

Getting ready for use

The first step is priming the filter element. It is important that this is done properly, otherwise purifying the water takes a very long time. For all information about BOROUX water filters, please see our library, where you will find manuals, instruction videos and answers to frequently asked questions, among other things. If priming with the tap does not work, you can order an automatic primer pump or manual primer pump from us.

Maintaining the BOROUX Foundation Black filter element

Scrub the BOROUX Foundation Black filter every 3-6 months. Gently scrub the surface of the filter for a few minutes with a scouring pad. Do NOT use soap or cleaning products on the filter. Prime the filters again and reinstall them according to the instructions.

Lifespan of the BOROUX Foundation Black filter

The BOROUX Foundation Black filter is designed for long-term use. However, the actual lifespan of the filter depends on various factors, such as:

● the quality of the water;

● the contaminants present and their concentrations;

● daily water consumption;

● the substances you specifically want to filter.

BOROUX gives a general replacement recommendation, based on a broad group of users and water qualities. In practice, the optimal replacement period can differ from user to user.

Based on our experience with Dutch tap water, we advise replacing the filter after a maximum of three years with average use and tap water. This is a practical guideline and not a fixed replacement period.

If you use water with higher concentrations of certain contaminants (for example water from other sources), have a high water consumption or want to retain maximum certainty for specific substances, you are better off replacing the filters sooner.

If you want to determine exactly when replacement is needed, only periodic analysis of the filtered water can give a definitive answer.

Please note: test results and maximum capacities differ per contaminant. Always consult the most up-to-date information and BOROUX test results for this.
