Sizes, volume and flow: the manufacturer's figures per model. Every system comes with two elements.
Pure Filters makes gravity filters from stainless steel (AISI 304) that come as standard with two Coldstream FTO PLUS elements. The principle is that of any gravity filter: tap water goes into the upper chamber, sinks through the elements, and the filtered water is ready in the lower chamber behind a tap. No power, no connection to the water mains. For how that works, see how does a gravity filter work.
The Coldstream FTO PLUS is a ceramic element with a carbon core, from the English factory that also made the ProOne G2.0 elements. This makes it low-maintenance: priming is not necessary, and fluoride reduction is already built in, so separate add-on filters are not needed either. According to the shop's product information, the element is NSF certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and tested to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and P231.
You replace it after 1,500 litres or six months, whichever comes first. The element also fits Berkey, BOROUX, British Berkefeld and ProOne. The story behind it: ProOne disappeared: the real element is called Coldstream FTO PLUS.
According to the shop, the Voyager (6 litres) is suitable for 1 to 2 people, the Home (9 litres) for 1 to 4 and the Family (12 litres) for 2 to 6. A handy rule of thumb: allow roughly two litres of chamber capacity per person as a daily buffer. If you are unsure, choose the larger size: you will have to top it up less often.
An honest comparison: Pure Filters wins on convenience and entry price. No priming, no add-on filters, and replacement is always the same element. On the other hand, you change the elements more often than the black elements from BOROUX or Berkey, for which a guideline of a maximum of three years applies. So count on the cost of elements per year, not just the purchase price. More in which water filter should you buy?
Clean once a month, together with the chambers: rinse the elements under a cold tap and lightly scour them with a scouring sponge. More on this: cleaning and maintaining a water filter.
In short. Pure Filters is the stainless steel gravity filter for anyone who wants it as simple as possible: three sizes (6, 9 and 12 litres), with Coldstream FTO PLUS elements as standard, with no priming and with fluoride reduction included. You change the elements every six months or after 1,500 litres.
No. The ceramic Coldstream FTO PLUS elements do not need to be primed: fit them, fill the upper chamber, done.
Yes. Fluoride reduction is built into the Coldstream FTO PLUS element itself; a separate add-on filter is not needed.
After 1,500 litres or six months, whichever comes first. If the upper chamber starts to empty noticeably more slowly sooner than that, clean the elements first.
According to the shop: Voyager (6 litres) for 1 to 2 people, Home (9 litres) for 1 to 4, Family (12 litres) for 2 to 6. The selection guide works it out with you.
Yes. The Coldstream FTO PLUS is the direct successor in the ProOne Traveler+, Big+ and Big II, and also fits Berkey, BOROUX and British Berkefeld. The selection guide shows which element fits your system, per brand.
Berkey and BOROUX work with black carbon elements that you prime and that last up to three years; for fluoride you fit an add-on filter underneath. Pure Filters works with the ceramic Coldstream element: no priming, fluoride included, change every six months. See also the Berkey models and the BOROUX models.
